Reduce MSDs

PREVENT MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS (MSD)

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the leading cause of occupational disease in France, up 50% since 2004 *. They are linked in particular to the arduousness of the work, the aging of the different actors and the conditions of the tasks performed.

Musculoskeletal disorders mainly affect muscles, tendons and nerves in the neck, shoulders, wrists and knees. They express themselves with pain, stiffness, clumsiness or loss of strength and can become chronic or disabling.

MSDs can be very expensive for the company because they can cause disorganization, can reduce productivity and quality, have a significant impact on absenteeism and turnover.

Several factors take part in the aggravation of MSDs:

  • Repetitiveness of gestures
  • Excessive effort (heavy loads)
  • Work requiring precise and fine gestures
  • Postures uncomfortable or sustained for long periods
  • Psychosocial factors: stress, excessive workload, isolation, …
  • Individual factors: age, gender, health status, history, …

The prevention of MSDs is carried out first of all by a screening phase of risky work situations, then by an ergonomic intervention.

This intervention involves actions that will seek to modify work situations in order to reduce the constraints on employees, particularly in terms of biomechanical demands.

HOW DOES TIR’POUSS HELP REDUCE MSDs?

Balin’s electric powered push-pull handcart focuses primarily on musculoskeletal disorders related to load transport (lifting and shifting of the load).

The design of the different modules of the Tir’pouss makes it possible to change the ergonomics of work and the posture of the operator on several points.

The lifting of the load uses the legs instead of the back and the arms, with a reduction of the effort due to the lever arm.

When moving the load, keep the back straight, in a comfortable position, instead of leaning forward and pulling the load on the kidneys and shoulders.

The movable drawbar and the fine programming of the electric assistance make it possible to adapt as close as possible to the characteristics of the users, giving the Tir’Pouss a great versatility of use.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO EQUIP TIR’POUSS (in France)

CARSAT (in France) helps SMEs to implement MSD reduction approaches, both during the diagnosis phase and in the implementation of an MSD reduction action plan.
For example, for SMEs of less than 50 people, CARSAT can finance the acquisition of equipment to reduce the MSDs related to the attitude at the workstation, especially in case of:

  • manual handling of loads,
  • repetitive efforts,
  • stressful postures
